Biography  
John B. Shoven, PhD John B. Shoven is the Charles R. Schwab Professor of Economics and the Wallace R. Hawley Director of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. He has served on the Board of Directors of Cadence Design Systems since 1992 and has been Chairman since 2005. He chairs the compensation committee and serves on both the nominating and governance committee and the audit committee. He also serves on the boards of Exponent, Inc. and American Century Funds. Dr. Shoven has a B.A. in physics from UCSD and a PhD in economics from Yale. He has been on the Stanford faculty since 1973 where he a Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a former Vice President of the American Economic Association. At Stanford, he has served as Chairman of the Economics Department and as Dean of Humanities and Sciences. He was a recipient of the Paul A. Samuelson Award for Outstanding Scholarly Writing on Lifelong Financial Security and is an award winning teacher at Stanford. In 2000, he was named one of the forty outstanding alumni of UCSD. His research fields include corporate finance, corporate taxation, pension plans, Social Security and Medicare, and public finance. He has published more than twenty books and one hundred professional articles.
